Ministry of Fisheries Tongafish Pathway Project, in Partnership with World Bank, Facilitates Boat Handover to Ha'atafu and Kolonga Special Management Area

[TONGA, May 7, 2024] – In a significant step towards bolstering marine conservation efforts and advancing sustainable fisheries management, the Ministry of Fisheries Tongafish Pathway Project, generously funded by the World Bank, has facilitated the handover of boats to the Ha'atafu and Kolonga Special Management Area. This initiative aims to enhance data collection and monitoring capabilities, crucial for the preservation of Tonga's rich marine biodiversity.


The Ha'atafu and Kolonga Special Management Area have been recognized for their exemplary dedication to marine conservation and sustainable fishing practices. Their unwavering commitment to data collection and monitoring has contributed significantly to the understanding of local marine ecosystems, laying the foundation for evidence-based management decisions.


The World Bank reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Tonga's fisheries sector through sustainable development initiatives.
