Tongafish Pathway Project Hands Over 11 Boats to Special Management Area Communities in Ha'apai

October 23, 2024 - Nuku’alofa, Tonga - The Tongafish Pathway Project, funded by the World Bank and administered by the Ministry of Fisheries in Tonga, proudly handed over 11 boats to Special Management Area (SMA) communities in Ha'apai. This significant event highlights a shared commitment to enhancing sustainable fisheries management and supporting local communities.

The handover ceremony was led by the Acting Minister of the Ministry of Fisheries, Lord Fohe, who formally presented the boats to representatives from each of the 11 SMAs, with the spirit of fully supporting the goals of the Ministry of Fisheries to manage our marine resources.  These boats are expected to play a vital role in strengthening the local communities' capacity to manage and safeguard their fisheries, fostering sustainable practices that will benefit future generations.

 

 

As part of the ceremony, the Stakeholder and Engagement Practices regarding boat operations and safety were presented by the Safeguard Officer for the Tongafish Pathway Project, Dr. Tevita Vea'ila. Dr. Vea'ila emphasized the importance of boat safety and the role of the SMA communities in upholding responsible and sustainable use of these vessels. His presentation provided crucial guidance on safe operations, while reinforcing the project's focus on enhancing local capacity and promoting environmental stewardship.

Lord Fohe expressed his gratitude to the World Bank for its continuous support in funding initiatives that prioritize sustainable fisheries management. He highlighted that the provision of these boats is a step forward in empowering the SMA communities, enabling them to contribute effectively to Tonga’s fisheries sector and to play a greater role in the protection of their marine resources.

 

The Tongafish Pathway Project continues to serve as a beacon of progress, with a clear vision of sustainable development that aligns with Tonga’s broader environmental and economic aspirations. The successful handover of the boats is another milestone in a series of initiatives designed to support local fisheries, improve livelihoods and ensure that Tonga's marine resources remain abundant for years to come.
